The internationally recognized government of Libya confirmed the deaths of Lt. Gen. Mohamed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, the army chief of staff, and other officers flying home after a meeting in Turkey.

Firefighters said that the pilot deployed an "airframe parachute system," which allowed the aircraft to make a safe landing in the Cleveland National Forest.

Galveston police have confirmed a small airplane carrying six passengers crashed Monday afternoon into the water near Galveston Bay. The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. west of the Galveston causeway, according to a Galveston Police Department spokesperson.
